The iPhone was released with a lot of hype- most of which it lives up to. It is a great multimedia player, web browser and status symbol. It incorporates a touchscreen as the whole control interface for the device, using finger motions to zoom, scroll, type and dial. The iPhone's design and user interface are both great, and it supports Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity. Its screen is nothing short of spectacular. Unfortunately, it does not have 3G or instant messaging support, instead providing only text messaging, e-mail and use of AT&T's EDGE network. Furthermore, the iPhone is only sold with AT&T service, which binds the user to a 2-year plan. However, it is possible to find software on the web to unlock the iPhone for use with other carriers' SIM cards. The Safari web browser is very good, the Google Maps application works quite well (although GPS support would have been nice), and there are a lot of bells and whistles that make the iPhone experience special. At the end of the day, as one should expect with a new technology, there are a few quirks and some room for improvement with the iPhone- but the recent reduction in price to $399 makes it worthwhile, especially for the multimedia fan. The mobile-dependent businessperson might be better off waiting for a future upgraded model.
